Exciting things are in the works for Badger Tenkara Rods
Since we first introduced the CLASSIC rod in 2014, Badger has made it our mission to set the standard for affordable quality in Tenkara fly fishing gear. We've focused on developing rods that deliver exceptional, hassle free performance on the waters and species we fish here in North America - and that's made Badger one of America's favorite Tenkara brands. While we are happy that our CLASSIC, BAD AXE, UNC, and WISCO rods are popular choices, we are always looking to offer you more and better choices. We've got some projects in the works that you're going to be excited about!
SPEC-OPS edition CLASSIC and UNC
A RIVERWORKS/BADGER TENKARA Collaboration is underway!
We're excited to collaborate with Jeff lomino of RIVERWORKS on an exclusive run of CLASSIC and UNC rods this year. Featuring a hydrographic ACU camo pattern on the cork grip and tan EVA end caps, the extra details on the SPEC-OPS edition are a perfect compliment to Badger's signature matte OD green blank. Only 12 of each model will be available. Look for pricing on the ClASSIC models in November, with the UNCs becoming available in Spring of 2017.
Our popular WISCO has proven itself an extremely capable "bigger fish, bigger water" rod. We've gotten great feedback from our customers, and have pushed the limits with it ourselves. Big Bass and large Trout in fast current, Musky, tropical Machaca - the WISCO has been put to the test and delivered!
All that being said, we've learned a lot since we designed the rod, and our goal is to make it even better! We are fine-tuning the action to create a smoother power transition throughout the blank. This means that the WISCO Two will have a bit more flex than the original, but will manage fast loading more effectively - making it even better suited to catching larger fish!
We are also redesigning the cork grip. The original design's 18 inch grip offered lots of real estate for two handed casting and/or playing of the fish once hooked. Many anglers appreciated the extra space and excellent balance, but it did have some drawbacks. We're considering a few options, some more radical than others: 1) Leave the grip length much as it is - at about 18 inches. 2) Reduce the grip length to 14 inches. This should still allow two handed casting and the ability to bring in a second hand when needed - but will make it a primarily one handed design. 3) Split the grip. This will reduce the overall weight of the rod, while maintaining something close to the original rod's balance and two-handed capability.

Split-grip: One of several potential designs for the WISCO Two.
Over the past year or so, you may have caught us talking about prototypes for a new rod. We've shared a few pictures and videos of them, and even brought them along to the Tenkara Jam. This post seems a fine time to "declassify" the project, and let everyone know what we are working on.
The design process for this rod actually stretches back almost two years. After visiting the inaugural Oni school in Utah, our interest in longer, more flexible rods peaked and we began to discuss how they fit into our home waters here in Wisconsin. We conducted several months of investigative testing, and our initial prototypes hit the water in early spring of 2016.
The concept for the design is a longer rod with a slower, more flexible action than you'll find on our current Badger models. As always, our focus is on creating a smooth, consistent casting experience that is an exceptional value for the angler. That being said, we've learned a lot since we first started designing rods. Now we are going to take it to the next level with a truly premium rod.
To achieve the weight, balance, and flex profile we are looking for, we are sourcing blanks through "Tenkara Tanuki", and this gives us access to some of the best custom blanks in the industry! We are confident that the collaboration of Badger design and Tanuki parts will result in a rod that delivers world-class performance.
2017 is going to be an exciting year - Stay tuned! - Matt and Mike @ Badger
